Unpacking SupportEd’s Year of Impact Top Five

The holidays are here, 2023 is wrapping up, and the SupportEd team is looking back on the year. With an abundance of resources, PD workshops, and coaching sessions from the past year, SupportEd has continued to bolster the work of educators who tirelessly champion MLs’ success within and beyond the classroom.  This article looks back at SupportEd’s top five high impact initiatives in 2023.

1.) Ongoing Collaboration with Multiple School Districts

Through our partnerships with several districts in the US, we have provided sustained professional development, coaching, and technical assistance to empower MLs (including increasing numbers of newcomers and SLIFE) and their educators.  We have experienced firsthand how teachers’ practices have evolved, resulting in MLs’ increased engagement with challenging content while they are acquiring English skills. Our work providing individualized technical assistance has enabled districts to advocate more strongly for effective programming and staffing to support their unique ML populations.

2.) Brand New ML Resource Library

An award-winning website redesign included a fully revamped Multilingual Learner Resource Library. With nine topics and formats such as printables, webinars, and articles to search by, users can easily explore a multitude of free tools and resources with topics including advocacy, SLIFE, social emotional learning (SEL), Career and Technical Education (CTE), and scaffolding instruction to name a few. All practical tools are available for educators to download, use, and share with colleagues – perfect for turnaround professional development.

3.) Highly Anticipated 2nd Edition of Unlocking Multilingual Learners’ Potential Announced

SupportEd authors have been busy writing not one, but two books this year. While they won’t be released until 2024, these books are shaped by our ongoing collaboration with ML educators and students. The first book is the eagerly anticipated second edition of Unlocking Multilingual Learners’ Potential: Strategies for Making Content Accessible. Authors Diane Staehr Fenner, PhD, Sydney Snyder, PhD, and Meghan Gregoire-Smith, MA, share dynamic, research-backed strategies that every educator of MLs can add to their repertoire. The book will be released January 2024 and is available for pre-order today.

4.) Social Emotional Learning for MLs Book in Progress

The second book that has been in the works this year, Social Emotional Learning for Multilingual Learners: Essential Actions for Success, from authors Diane Staehr Fenner, PhD, and Mindi Teich, MEd, breaks down how each of the five competencies in the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) SEL framework can be implemented with ML success in mind. In this first of a kind book, the authors demonstrate practical ways to weave SEL skills into content and language instruction for MLs. The new book will be released April 2024 and is available for pre-order today.

5.) 19 Keynote and Conference Sessions Conducted

We are so grateful for all of the opportunities that we have had this year to engage with amazing ML educators and their students, and we are looking forward to continuing this work in 2024! We wish you a joyous and relaxing holiday season, and we hope to connect with you in the new year.
