Every year, many multilingual learners (ML) and students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE) enroll in US schools for the first time. The intake and enrollment process will play an essential role in welcoming all MLs and helping them feel connected to their new school and district. The ML Newcomers and SLIFE Intake and Enrollment Checklist is a tool that will support you and your school or district team in thoughtfully integrating MLs into the school environment. The checklist outlines key criteria we encourage you to address to ensure a thorough, inclusive, and supportive process for MLs and their families.
Considerations
Collaborate with school and district staff, including counselors, teachers, assessment specialists, and administrative staff, to identify areas of strength and areas of need in your current intake and enrollment process. Identify action steps you can take as a school or district to address areas of need.
Use the checklist as a monitoring tool to ensure that all components of your intake and enrollment process are being implemented effectively and consistently. You can schedule periodic feedback sessions with key staff members to identify areas where your processes may not align with the goals outlined in the checklist.
Use the checklist as a guide for organizing workshops or informational sessions for families. These sessions can help families understand the enrollment process, services that may be available to them, and how the school and teachers plan to support their students. Family sessions must be provided in a language families understand. Engaging with families in this way, especially if the workshops are conducted in a space that is comfortable for families, will build further trust between families and the school.
