Description

Sentence Starters to Support Self-Awareness Guide is intended for K-12 teachers and counselors to use the sentence starters to help scaffold multilingual learners’ (MLs) discussion of their self-awareness.

Considerations

Discussing individual personal strengths may not come naturally to many MLs, and they will need educators to teach and support their use of the language of self-awareness.

How It Works
  1. Educators can model discussing their own self-awareness about a personal topic or classroom activity.

  2. Select a small number of relevant sentence starters from those listed on the template that are the best match for MLs’ age and the task.

  3. Explicitly teach MLs how to use the sentence stems to discuss their self-awareness.

  4. Plan your next steps in instruction, keeping student responses and potential areas for growth in self-awareness in mind.
