When MLs feel safe, welcome, and included in their school and classroom communities, they are better positioned to take risks, share their perspectives, and show empathy for others. The Creating a Classroom Environment for MLs: SEL Checklist will support educators to consider both physical and non-physical elements of their setting that can help create an environment that is conducive to MLs’ well-being.
Considerations
Educators must follow school or district guidelines and often have limited control over the type of furniture available to them. Consider small tweaks and adjustments that you can make over time that will enhance the learning space for MLs.
In many cases, when educators bring physical items, such as lights, seating, or plants into their classroom, they provide these at their own cost. Therefore, these items on the list are considered “nice-to-haves”, not must haves.
It is essential to move beyond the physical space and also embed instructional practices the consistently remind MLs that the classroom is a safe space. These items on the list are the “must-haves.”
How It Works

Prioritize items that are missing, and make a plan to integrate them. Collaborate with, or reach out to, colleagues if you need support incorporating some of the non-physical practices into your daily instruction.
