Description
Peer learning activities support MLs’ understanding of content as well as their English language development. It is important to support MLs’ participation in peer learning activities so that they are able to successfully engage in them. To do so, you can help MLs come to the discussion prepared by pre-teaching vocabulary and language structures, explicitly teaching them to be aware of nonverbal communication, and putting structures in place to support turn-taking and making connections. The Peer Learning Activity Checklist provides guiding questions to assist you in developing peer learning activities that will support MLs’ active participation and engagement.
Considerations
Consider using this checklist collaboratively with a co-teaching partner or a team of teachers. Plan a peer learning activity using the checklist as a guide. Then, implement the activity and come back together to debrief how the activity supported MLs’ understanding of content and English language development. Continue to use this checklist to enhance and refine your instructional practices.
How It Works
Use the guiding questions on the checklist to self-assess, or have a colleague peer-assess, a peer learning activity you have developed for MLs. For any question where “no” is indicated, develop follow-up steps to adjust the activity to better support MLs’ active participation and engagement in the activity.
