Academic Language Development in Speaking & Writing Checklist for MLs
Description Directions

Supporting MLs’ Academic-Language Development in Speaking and Writing Checklist is a teacher planning tool to support you in developing speaking and writing tasks to foster MLs’ academic language development.

Through a series of awareness-building questions, the tool helps you to focus on language goals and determine the academic language that students need to use at the word/phrase, sentence, and discourse levels in order to effectively engage with your content.

The checklist helps guide you to consider the impact the sociocultural context has on the assignment or activity. For example, does the assignment or activity assume any experience, background knowledge, or awareness for MLs to understand it?

Step 1:  Begin by noting the lesson objective, as well as the type and purpose of the text students will be producing.
Example: Students may be asked to explain how they solved a math problem, write a problem solution essay or engage in a debate with their peers.

Step 2: Use the awareness-building questions to identify the different levels of academic language students will produce.

Reviews

“This checklist has been such a lifesaver with helping to plan and guide me with how to best serve my MLs. I love how it also contains examples along with the checklist feature.”
