Description
Peer learning activities support MLs’ understanding of content as well as their English language development. It is important to support MLs’ participation in peer learning activities so that they are able to successfully engage in them. To do so, we suggest four practices for supporting MLs in peer learning activities:
- Come to the discussion prepared
- Be aware of non-verbal communication
- Participate by taking turns
- Make connections.
The Peer Learning Planning Template provides space and guiding questions to support you in embedding these four practices into your instructional practice.
Considerations
Consider using this planning template collaboratively with a co-teaching partner or a team of teachers. Plan a peer learning activity using the template to embed the four practices for supporting MLs in peer learning activities. Then, implement the activity and come back together to debrief how the activity supported MLs’ understanding of content and English language development. Continue to use this template and guiding questions to enhance and refine your instructional practices.
How It Works
Begin by identifying the unit or lesson topic, the content objective(s), the language objective(s), and the oral language task. Use the guiding questions to plan for how you will address each of the four practices for supporting MLs in peer learning activities.
