The ML Access Equity Audit helps educators and school leaders reflect on multilingual learners’ access to opportunities that contribute to academic success and belonging. By comparing participation rates for multilingual learners and non-multilingual learners across key areas—including extracurricular activities, advanced coursework, career and technical education, scheduling, dual language programming, and graduation—teams can identify equity gaps and prioritize actions that increase access and opportunity.
Considerations
- Compare multilingual learners’ participation rates to those of non-multilingual learners rather than to the overall percentage of MLs enrolled in the school or district.
- Use the reflection column to identify patterns, celebrate strengths, and determine areas where advocacy or systems-level changes are needed.
- Complete the audit collaboratively with a leadership team or school improvement team to promote shared responsibility for equitable access.
How It Works
- Collect participation and outcome data for multilingual learners and non-multilingual learners in each area of access.
- Record the data in the audit tool and compare the results.
- Reflect on areas where multilingual learners have equitable access and where disparities exist.
- Identify one or two priority areas for improvement and develop an action plan to increase equitable opportunities for multilingual learners.
