A community walk helps teachers and staff learn more about students’ communities and cultures. It’s like a field trip, where the teachers are the students and the students/parents are the teachers!
Considerations
Students and families may need support in developing their community walk and may be nervous speaking to groups of school staff. Consider ways to partner with them to help them feel empowered to share about their community and culture. The timing of community walks is crucial. Often, community walks are organized in the first week of school to ground teachers and staff in better understanding their students and families. Some community walks are organized at different times of the year because new groups of students and families have recently enrolled.
How It Works
Students and families plan and coordinate a tour of their community, planning specific places to visit that will highlight the strengths of their community and culture and the challenges they face that teachers and school staff may not be aware of.
