In order to support MLs with academic language development at the word/phrase level, MLs should be explicitly taught new and unfamiliar vocabulary, have opportunities to practice using new vocabulary in varied ways, and be given opportunities to practice word-learning strategies. The Vocabulary Instruction Checklist provides guiding questions to support you with the implementation of word/phrase level academic language development in your context.
Considerations
This is a helpful tool for teachers to plan for and teach new vocabulary throughout a unit. Consider using this checklist at the beginning of a unit for planning and then revisiting the checklist several times throughout the unit to ensure that you are using effective vocabulary practices for the MLs in your classroom.
How It Works
Use the Vocabulary Instruction Checklist to keep track of vocabulary that you have taught, as well as to take notes on specific activities that worked well or did not work well to refine your instruction. You could also use the checklist to keep track of the word-learning strategies that you have practiced with students and any challenges they have had. Using the checklist will support you as you work to bolster students’ understanding and use of academic vocabulary.
